Beginnings…Heaven and Earth

Before the mountains were born,
before You gave birth to the earth and the world,
from eternity to eternity, You are God
.” – Psalm 90:2

The one true God that loves us so intimately is eternal. He had us in mind long before the foundations of the world. He had all of creation planned before time began. Every detail mapped out.

Then by His breath, the clock of time began. Time, matter, water; “the heavens and the earth” came into existence.

By faith we understand that the universe was created by God’s command, so that what is seen has been made from things that are not visible” – Hebrews 11:3

Can you imagine being a witness to all this? By His word, life appears.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness covered the surface of the watery depths, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.” – Genesis 1:1-2

God begins His masterpiece of creation. As a potter takes clay to create something beautiful, I picture God’s hands taking the water and molding it. Peering into the water, He has already seen what creation will look like.

The heavens were made by the word of the Lord,
and all the stars, by the breath of His mouth.
He gathers the waters of the sea into a heap;
He puts the depths into storehouses.” – Psalm 33:6-7

When you stand at the coastline and look at the vast expanse of the ocean, you can’t help but feel overwhelmed by its size and power. When the wind picks up and the waves grow, it is humbling. Your size as a human is put into perspective and you are reminded that there is so much more to this life than your fragile state.

With that perspective in mind, our powerful magnificent God took all the water in the universe into His hands and began to shape it.

Who enclosed the sea behind doors
when it burst from the womb,
when I made the clouds its garment
and thick darkness its blanket,
when I determined its boundaries
and put its bars and doors in place,
when I declared: “You may come this far, but no farther;
your proud waves stop here”?

Have you entered the place where the snow is stored?
Or have you seen the storehouses of hail?

Who cuts a channel for the flooding rain
or clears the way for lightning,
to bring rain on an uninhabited land,
on a desert with no human life,
to satisfy the parched wasteland
and cause the grass to sprout?
Does the rain have a father?
Who fathered the drops of dew?
Whose womb did the ice come from?
Who gave birth to the frost of heaven
when water becomes as hard as stone,
and the surface of the watery depths is frozen?

Do you know the laws of heaven?
Can you impose its authority on earth?
Can you command the clouds
so that a flood of water covers you?
” – Job 38: 8-11, 22, 25-30, 33-34

I want to take some time to explore Genesis. I want to bring us back to the beginning of it all; to remind us of the beauty and perfection of creation. To reflect upon our Creator. To be reminded of why we worship.

May His power and majesty bring you to worship Him today.

Let the whole earth tremble before the Lord;
let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him.
 For He spoke, and it came into being;
He commanded, and it came into existence.”
– Psalm 33:6-9
