Beginnings – Light and Darkness

“And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.” – Genesis 1:3-5

The first full day began. Time and the calendar were created. We were able to record history from that point on. How wonderful. How profound!

To be honest, I almost skipped over this passage in this series because it’s over my head. How did God create light and darkness without the sun and moon yet? Was it referring to energy? Was it entailing the spiritual realm?

There are some theories regarding this topic, but overall, this is something that only God knows. I look forward to the day I can understand these concepts.

You may be asking why I didn’t skip over it then? I didn’t because I want you to understand that there will be subjects in the Bible that are beyond your comprehension. They are there for a reason. They are to remind you that God is an all-sovereign, all-knowing, most holy God. If you knew everything, you too would be a god. But I’m glad no one else is.

By putting mysteries in the Bible for us, it gives us the need to look to and seek the Lord. It causes us to wonder.

We are not to fear what we don’t know. Scripture should intimidate us at times. It is what challenges us to grow and to keep seeking His truth. But fear is not from God. So, how are we to act when we come across something too deep for us to comprehend?

We are to worship. We are to marvel in reverential awe of how amazing and powerful God is. We are to give God the glory. We are to realize that we only have finite minds, and that it’s okay. It’s part of the fun in searching for answers and understanding.

King Solomon, the wisest man ever to live apart from Jesus wrote:

“And I applied my heart to seek and to search out by wisdom all that is done under heaven. It is an unhappy business that God has given to the children of man to be busy with.” – Ecclesiastes 1:13

I can’t help but laugh each time I read this passage. I picture Solomon bemoaning the fact that he couldn’t figure out such fascinating details. I also appreciate this verse because it reminds me that we aren’t supposed to. If he couldn’t figure it out, no one will.

There are passages of Scripture that we will never understand this side of the New Kingdom. But there are passages that will be enlightened by the Holy Spirit as we continue to be sanctified in Him. James said,

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” – James 1:5

If you are stumped on something in Scripture, ask the Lord to give you His wisdom in order to understand it. Research it. Seek wise counsel. There could be something that the Lord wants to share with you. You can feel slightly intimidated by it, but don’t fear it. If He doesn’t reveal understanding to you at this time, He may do so later.

This is the beauty and fascination of the Bible. It is profound. It holds all truth. It’s full of mystery. Yet, it is the greatest, most impactful message you will ever learn from. Enjoy the process.
